Richmond, Virginia
The first permanent English settlement in Richmond was established in 1607. Before the establishment of a town, the area was inhabited by the Indian tribes of the Powhatan Confederacy. The city, also serving as Virginia's state capital, was designed by Thomas Jefferson and was finally completed in 1788. The capitol building is the second oldest statehouse that is currently used in the United States. In the early 1920’s, several performing arts venues were built including the Mosque and Loew’s Theater. 1963-1965 proved to be one of the largest population growths in the area resulting in the construction of nearly 700 buildings in the area.
There are many things to do and see in the Richmond area. There is the Belle Isle, Historic Downtown, Maymount Park, Monument Avenue, Byrd Park, Virginia Arts Museum, Science Museum of Virginia, the Children’s Museum of Richmond, Black History Museum, Egyptian Building, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, Hollywood Cemetery, Lucky Strike Factory and more.
